Sea of Thieves 64 - Fan Made Game
As part of a retro de-make game jam, my friend and I took a fairly modern game and remade it as if it was made 20 years ago. We chose to de-make one of our favorite games, Sea of Thieves, developed by Rare and originally launched on the Microsoft Xbox One in 2018. We decided to de-make this game as if it was made for the Nintendo 64, a system originally launched in 1996. We felt this was an appropriate decision since Rare, back then known as Rareware, was originally known for making platformer style games for Nintendo’s systems before they were bought out by Microsoft in 2002. While Sea of Thieves was not that kind of game, we decided to our de-make of this game, known as Sea of Thieves 64, a platformer anyway since we felt that would have been something they would have made.
While my friend spearheaded this project as lead and sole programmer, I was tasked with creating art assets, as well as animating the main playable character. This was my first time modeling and animating anything for a 3D game, so it was an interesting challenge and a good way to learn how the process works. Thankfully, since I have had years of animation experience, it wasn’t that hard to translate the knowledge I had for animating in 2D to 3D. While I modeled and animated 2 characters, only one was playable, with the other character being left on the main island. I also worked on environmental assets as well as the fruit pick ups, of which only the pineapple item made it into the game. The game’s page can be seen here.
I also designed a mockup for the game’s box and cartridge label.
The main characters of the game, Thieva and Sean.
